IT IS IMPORTANT that health professionals and Aesthetic Medical Doctors know about Diabesity, since:
- there is a high percentage of overweight / obese patients in our offices
- there are more and more post-menopausal women and more adult males in the consultations with overweight and/ or obesity
- Obesity often leads to Diabetes (Diabesity)
- an early detection of problems allows a good preventive medicine
Diabesity: Concept
The causal relationship between obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been recognized in recent decades and is often expressed with the term diabesity (Cornell and D’Souza, 2014). It is widely accepted that high-calorie diets and a sedentary lifestyle have an important influence on the incidence and outcome of type 2 diabetes and obesity and that they can occur simultaneously, a situation called diabesity. Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that affects adults and children worldwide. It has become one of the leading causes of death, since it is known that obesity is the main risk factor for several non-communicable diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes. This close relationship led to the connotation of “diabesity,” highlighting the fact that most people with diabetes are overweight or obese. In the shadow of obesity appears type 2 diabetes, an important metabolic disease of our time. The appearance of both pathologies in the same individual is now designated as diabesity, which over time will have a significant impact on the health of the body that compromises the quality of life. There is no doubt that we are facing an unprecedented diabetogenic era. With the adoption of a western diet and a sedentary life, the number of obese diabetics continues to increase every day.
